]]>On World Ocean Day 2020 it is timely to highlight how finfish such as cod, haddock, salmon and hake are sold and consumed. At most seafood counters, finfish are neatly arranged and sold filleted.
Do you ever wonder what happens to the rest of the fish?
For perspective, every year roughly 8.5 billion pounds of finfish land in the United States. Only a small portion of finfish finds its way onto the plates of Americans. When a finfish is filleted more than half the fish - from the nose to the tail, as well as the bones, remain. Unlike with many other animal products, fish remains do not find their way into food products, but rather are mainly disposed of in landfills.
Yes, millions of tons each year go into landfills. This is both a waste challenge and a missed nutritional opportunity.
American consumption of seafood is about 4.8 ounces per week, significantly short of dietary guidelines, which recommend eating 8 ounces of seafood per week. Seafood is a great source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, and minerals. Numerous studies have shown that a diet with seafood improves cardiovascular and brain health, and reduces the risk of depression and autoimmune diseases.
Using locally sourced wild-caught finfish, Five Way Foods extracts value from the fish remains that would otherwise be headed to landfills. We use the fish bones and other remains to create our Fish Bone Broth: a nutrient-dense broth containing calcium, omega-3-fatty acids, protein, and natural iodine, with no saturated fat. A perfect bone broth to make a stir fry, chowder, seafood stew, soup, or even drink as a beverage!
We invite you to try this healthy broth today.

There's a reason you won't find Five Way Foods alongside the shelf stable broths our parents used for years. Take a closer look at the label, you'll find a medley of food-like products, but not much of the real thing.
In order to make something shelf stable, the product must be either treated with extreme heat or dried to destroy any microorganisms that might carry food borne illness. Both of these processes also destroy the nourishing vitamins and minerals broth traditionally contains, stripping it of many health benefits. Flavor is also entirely compromised, requiring the addition of excess sodium, various forms of sugar, that infamous "natural flavoring", and vegetable concentrate or powder amongst other additives.
We take pride in crafting our broths the right way – each is slow-simmered and made with local, fresh ingredients. Our process draws out essential minerals, vitamins and proteins, imbuing our broths with remarkable nutrition as well as unbeatable flavor.
In the spirit of the season, there is no greater gift you can give or receive than good health! We encourage you to stop and think twice this year, skip those center aisles loaded with preservatives, and head for the refrigerated section where you’ll find the real thing. We’ll be waiting!
